SWANS AND SKULLS – NEW RESEARCH ON SERLACHIUS ART COLLECTION

ONLINE LECTURE 3

Janneke van Asperen: Masterful and mysterious. Rembrandt, Leiden and the Enigmatic Master I.S.

27 March 2025 from 4:15–5:30 pm UTC+2

One of the great mysteries of 17th-century Dutch art is the identity of the artist who signed his paintings with the initials I.S. The works of this enigmatic master are in major art collections, although his known output is not very extensive. The exhibition Master I.S. – The Enigmatic Contemporary of Rembrandt and the accompanying research project have been realized in collaboration with Museum De Lakenhal and Serlachius, where the exhibition is curated by Tomi Moisio.

Janneke van Asperen is the Curator of Old Masters at Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, the Netherlands. She is the curator of the exhibition Master I.S. – The Enigmatic Contemporary of Rembrandt at Museum De Lakenhal.

Swans and Skulls is a series of six online lectures organised in collaboration between the Serlachius Museum and the Department of Art History at the University of Helsinki in the spring of 2025. Art history experts’ presentations are aimed at anyone interested in viewing images and history related to them.

The lecture series focuses on the 15th- to-17th-century art in the Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation’s collection. The lectures will explain how the mindset of different eras is reflected in art and what new discoveries are being made in art history research today.
